Vernon County urges bike riders to wear helmets

In Vernon County, Wisconsin, the city of Viroqua is becoming a popular bicycle riding town, but the city is urging its residents to wear helmets while riding bicycles to avoid injury.

This campaign began when a mother was spotted riding a bike with a baby strapped to her back and neither of them had helmets on. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and other institutions show that the number of bicycle accidents have been increasing and the injuries when riders are not wearing helmets, are much more severe.

A study done by the Child’s Safety Network found that of  children under the age of 19, 63 percent of fatal bike accidents were due to head injuries.
