Settlement reached in Appleton boiler explosion

A $1.6 million settlement has been reached in a boiler explosion that occurred in 2009 and left one man with serious head injuries.

The man was working as a maintenance worker at Appleton Medical Center and following a technician’s instructions on what to do when a boiler exploded and a manhole cover flew off and hit him in the head.

He suffered a traumatic brain injury, blood loss, nerve damage, hearing loss, eye damage and facial nerve damage. After the explosion he was airlifted to the hosptial where he stayed for over a month for treatment. About $90,000 of the $1.6 million was set aside for future medical expenses that he will face.
