Michigan advocates fight to prevent nursing home abuse

A Michigan agency is fighting to keep the rights of disabled and elderly while in nursing homes, but advocating to stop abuse.

The Michigan Protection and Advocacy Protection Agency works to protect the legal rights of the disabled. The agency recently reported on two cases where maggots were found in nursing home patients. One in the person’s trachea and the other in an open wound.

The agency claims that these two cases show a statewide failure to provide quality care to nursing home residents. The agency released a report in order to shed light on these instances in order to correct the neglectful care.

Sheboygan resident arrested for fifth OWI over weekend

A Sheboygan man was arrested on Saturday afternoon for a drunk driving accident that occurred on Moenning Road.

According to County officials, the accident occurred as the man was driving down Moenning Road and he rear-ended a Toyota that was at the stop sign.

The driver of the Toyota was injured in the accident and was transported to Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center as a result. The driver of the other car was arrested as a result of the accident for alleged drunk driving, his fifth OWI offense.

One man injured in Byron motorcycle accident

A 49-year-old man was injured as a result of a motorcycle accident in Byron over the weekend.

According to police officials, the accident occurred as the man was test driving a motorcycle on Kelly Road and he went off the side of the road. This then caused the motorcycle to go airborne before striking an embankment.

He suffered life-threatening injuries as a result and was transported to the hospital by Flight for Life. Further information on the man’s injuries are unknown at this time.

Motorcycles can be fun and adventurous, but they also have a high level of risk associated with them. Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the man during his recovery time.

Car crashes involving deers increase in Wisconsin

Fatal crashes involving deer nearly doubled last year in Wisconsin and officials have said that this year they are also expecting an increase.

In 2010, there were 14 people killed in collision involving a deer. Across the state, the number of crashes involved deer in 2009 was at 16,338 and in 2010, it increased to 16,947.

The highest number of crashes in Wisconsin occur between October and November, which is the deer mating season. The second time during the year when a spike in deer-related accidents occurs is when the fawn leave the mother deer in May.

Furnace installer to pay $5 million after fatal home explosion

A furnace installer has agreed to pay $5 million after a fatal home explosion occurred last November.

According to investigators, one person was killed and two seriously injured after a home exploded in Sun Prairie. The explosion was allegedly caused by a gas leak from a furnace that was installed in the home six days prior to the explosion.

According to a Madison attorney, Daniel Rottier, the $5 million settlement was the largest amount of liability insurance coverage that the furnace company had. The family stated that the amount was not enough to cover damages, but they did not want to the company to go out of business as a result of the suit. The home was destroyed in the explosion and other neighboring homes were also damaged.
