Snow storm causes dangerous driving conditions in Wisconsin

A snow storm in in central and northern Wisconsin caused 18 inches of snow to layer the ground. This caused very dangerous driving conditions which lead to school closures.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, many highways in the area have been covered with ice and drivers have been urged to stay away. The storm began late Tuesday and continued through Wednesday. Areas ranged from 2 inches to 18 inches.

The storm also knocked out power for more than 14,000 people, many of these people lived nearly wooded areas in the state. Most school districts throughout the two areas canceled school on Wednesday.

Milk plant cited after dust particle fire

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has conducted an inspection at Fond Du Lac plant of Milk Specialties, Co.

According to a press release from OSHA, a fire was reported by the company when a dust explosion occurred. The company works to convert liquid whey products into a dry concentrated powder.

The company was cited for willful violation as a result of the inspection for having combustible dust products. A willful violation means that there was a knowing disregard for the law.  The proposed total for the violations is $72,oo0.

“This employer previously was cited for failing to comply with OSHA’s safety regulations. Failing to take appropriate precautions to protect workers from combustible dust explosions and fires is an unnecessary risk,” said Frank Winingham, OSHA’s area director in Appleton. “OSHA is committed to protecting workers on the job, especially when employers fail to do so.”

Those affected by drunk driving push to tighten up on laws

Those who have been affected by drunk driving accidents are now coming forward and voicing their opinion in the Wisconsin State Assembly so that lawmakers will toughen up on laws that prohibit impaired drivers from getting on the roadway.

As of now, in the state of Wisconsin, it is not a felony drunk driving charge until the fourth time a person is convicted. A new bill currently being discussed is Assembly Bill 208 and will allow for the third conviction to be felony charge.

This bill was first introduced in May 2011, but is just now getting a hearing. Many are excited for this bill to be pass and others will be continuing to push for even stricter enforcement such as sobriety checkpoints.

Racine County construction accident kills one man

A construction accident in Ozaukee County left one man dead. The accident occurred at a country club in the county when a worker fell from the roof just after 2:30 p.m.

According to officials, the 27-year-old man was working on a carpentry project at the Mequon Country Club when he fell from the roof for unknown reasons. The Racine County man was working in the upper area of the construction site at the time.

It is unknown if the man was wearing a harness at the time, but he was pronounced dead on the scene. An investigation into the accident is underway at this time and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration will also be joining in on the investigation efforts.

 

One million packs of birth control recalled by Pfizer

Pfizer has announced a recall of more that one million packs of birth control when it was found that there was a packaging issue that could result in an unwanted pregnancy for women taking it.

A pack of this birth control is supposed to contain 21 hormone pills and seven sugar tablets, but the the defective packets had either too few or too many hormone pills.

The recalled product, Lo/Ovral-28 tablets also has generic versions, Ethinyl Estradiol and Norgestrel and 14 lots of each have been recalled. A spokesperson for the company has stated that the error with the birth control pill was “mechanical and a visual inspection” mistake.
