A study done in Wisconsin hospitals shows that the rate of bloodstream infections are very high in the state. Nearly twenty patients a week get bloodstream infections from the central lines that are used to deliver fluids to their body.
Out of the patients that receive an infection, two to four of them are killed by it. The study also stated that these are rough estimates and that the actual number could be higher, but the state of Wisconsin does not require hospitals to record the number of people who are killed from bloodstream infections.
Seven other hospital-acquired infections were also researched including bedsores, urinary tract infections from a catheter, foreign objects left in a patient and falls. These incidents were studied because they occur often and are largely preventable.
